The World Desertification Day is to Combat Desertification and Drought. It is a United Nations observance celebrated annually on 17th June. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the presence of desertification and drought, highlighting methods of preventing desertification and recovering from drought.
The main causes of desertification include:
- Population growth – the population in some desert areas is increasing.
- Removal of wood – in developing countries, people use wood for cooking.
- Overgrazing – an increasing population results in larger desert areas being farmed.
What country has the most desertification?
Last on our list of countries fighting desertification isĀ Ethiopia. It is one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to desertification. It greatly impairs the food security of millions of rural dwellers living in Ethiopia’s regions.
